What would happen in our life if we believed all of God's word? I mean the totality of His truths - not just the ones we pick and choose? Knowing and embracing ALL of God's promises can really stretch a person. When I read the words, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", I humbly confess I still struggle sometimes. Maybe you can relate, perhaps you also have wanted to believe and trust God for more in your life, but you don't know how to get there. I believe that one of the keys to getting to these truths is learning to connect with God in our heart and not just in our mind.
One of my favorite people in the bible is King David. As I was reading through the story of young David confronting the giant Goliath, I was struck again with the truth of how much David must have trusted his God. Have you ever pondered why or even how David was able to stand up to a giant when he was only a young lad? How did David push through his emotions and what he saw with his eyes, and actually run towards his enemy? I believe it was because he had taken the time to commune with God and develop a deep relationship with Him - in essence he had learned the art of connecting with God in his heart. As a result, David had an intimate knowledge of the character and nature of the God he loved and served. Out of this revelation of who God was, David was able to accept his own identity - son of the Most High God, and perform amazing feats. It is safe to say that David was a brave young man and I believe that came only as a result of him understanding who he was and knowing who God was for him.
Most people believe and are convinced their identity is based on their behavior - what we consistently do or how we behave becomes the framework for how we view ourselves. Until we truly understand and know who He is, we will continue to think of ourselves based on our performance and live in defeat, even though we have access to a victorious life. Realizing your true identity in Christ is the key that unlocks the door to victory in every area of your life.
In God's Kingdom, our identity is based on the character and nature of our holy Father and our relationship with Him. God declares in scripture that He is good! He demonstrates over and over to His children that He is a good God, who is gracious, compassionate, kind and loving. Our heavenly Father is always calling us to "Come to Him". The invitation stands in the book of Isaiah, chapter 55 - "Come". In Matthew 11:28, Jesus invites the people into a deeper relationship with Him - "Come to Me, all of you who are heavy laden and I will give you rest". And again in Revelation we are familiar with the call - "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and fellowship with him". Our heavenly Father desires us to come to Him and know Him. He does this because He knows that as we find ourselves bundled up in His nature and goodness, we will find our true identity.
My husband and I have 3 daughters. When they were little, we always told them, "You are a Roitsch. Roitsch's don't lie....Roitsch's don't steal. Anyone in the Roitsch family loves God and serves Him". We taught them at an early age their identity was tied to their name. They behaved according to this belief because they knew they were a Roitsch! As they have grown into young women, our role now is to remind them of who they are. Sometimes we forget. I believe the LORD would say to you today my friend, "Remember who you are. I created you and poured My love upon you. Find yourself wrapped in the completeness of who I am. You are good because I AM good. You can do anything because you have my powerful nature within yourself".
(Ezekiel 36:27; Jeremiah 31:33)
We are not capable of fully moving in God's power until we fully understand who we are. Once our identity is established in our mind and we KNOW who we are and who we belong to, then we will walk in boldness and great strength. Our enemy doesn't want us to know that we have been given a new, divine nature to replace our old sin nature. The good news is that we no longer have to live the way we did before we became part of God's family. We have all we need to stand before the giants in our lives without fear, just like David did, not because of our strengths or abilities, but because our Father has promised to be with us and will fight our battles for us. When we know that we KNOW who we are - Prince's and Princess' of the Universe, sons and daughters of the KING -- all things truly are possible through Christ who strengthens us!!!
"For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons and daughters of God". Romans 8:19 NKJ
